The Spectrum 5 Band Architecture

A whole school vertically aligned instructional infrastructure designed to stabilise and lift educational standards from Prep - Year 12

One lesson structure. Five cognitive bands. Whole school consistency.

Learning Doesn't Happen in Year Levels. It Happens on a Spectrum

Every student learns across five cognitive bands — from foundations to independence. At Spectrum, we identify where students truly sit by concept and design learning that meets them there.

Explicit Teaching Framework: One Lesson, Five Bands

Explore the bands

All students receive the same explicit instruction. What differs is the level of support and stretch embedded within the lesson sequence.
This allows:
• Mixed-ability classrooms to remain unified
• Intervention to occur without segregation
• Extension without creating a separate curriculum
• Fluid movement between bands across concepts
Students are not fixed in a band. They move according to readiness within each topic.

Most students don’t sit at one fixed point on this spectrum. Their needs change over time—and sometimes by subject. Spectrum is designed to move with students, not lock them into one model.

How Differentiation Works in Practice

At its core, Spectrum identifies each student's core band through an initial multi-level assessment.

From there, all students move through the same explicit instructional sequence. They differ only in how far they progress within the lesson.

Students are not fixed in a band. They:

  • Progress toward Air (+1) and Aether (+2) as mastery develops

  • Restabilise in Earth (-2) or Water (-1) bands when foundational support is required.

  • Sit in different bands across different concepts. For example, a student may be at Band 0 for fractions but be at Band -2 for measurement.

This structure ensures students consolidate understanding, while allowing all students to be supported with stabilising content before demonstrating independence and mastery.

This allows:

  • Intervention, core instruction, and extension to coexist within the same class

  • Differentiation without parallel lesson planning

  • Consistent teaching quality across classrooms

Why This Matters for Schools

This model:

  • Aligns with evidence-based explicit teaching practices

  • Enables differentiation without increasing workload

  • Preserves whole school curriculum coherence

  • Makes learning visible and measurable

  • Integrates seamlessly into existing classroom structures

Spectrum applies explicit teaching and gradual release within a single, coherent lesson design allowing every student progresses from readiness to mastery at their own pace.

Designed to Support Educator Time and Consisency

By sequencing learning through:

Explicit modelling → Guided practice → independent application

students experience early success and build confidence alongside competence.

Each workbook contains a complete weekly structure — instruction, examples, practice, assessment, and review — reducing time spent preparing materials, clarifying expectations, or recreating resources.

This allows time to be redirected toward:

- teaching and feedback

- individual student support

- consistent delivery across cohorts
